Chicago PD Detective Oscar Ortuso gives Jean Brooks the shocking news that her husband, pediatric oncologist Dr. Sam Brooks, was found dead behind the wheel of a rented vehicle down by the waterfront. The shocking aspect to Jean is not Sam's death in and of itself, but that Sam was declared dead five years ago after he was suspected to have drowned in a boating accident. The only identification on Sam's person which led Oscar to Jean was a medic alert bracelet and a just used one-way plane ticket from Detroit to Chicago. This news is difficult for Jean as she has been unable to move on from what she believed was Sam's death five years ago, something her overbearing mother, Gladys Lambert, has tried to get her to do, and something Jean will have to try and do from the start all over again. As Sam seems to have died from natural causes (a heart attack), Oscar has no choice but to close the case despite he knowing that Jean has questions which are as of yet unanswerable.
